College Hockey Weekly Report Wisconsin reigns supremacy in the showcase

There is a new #1 team in the land, and that is the Wisconsin Badgers. With victories over Michigan State and Michigan, the Badgers took the top spot in this weeks polls.

On Friday night the Badgers were down against the Spartans 1-0 through 2 periods. However, in the third period Wisconsin's offense clicked. Jake Dowell scored the first goal to tie it at 1, his second goal of the season. Adam Burish would score the game winning goal 5:30 later to give the Badgers a 2-1 lead. Ryan MacMurchy added an empty netter to give the Badgers the 3-1 win over Michigan State. Brian Elliott played well stopping 19 shots out of 20.

On Saturday the Badgers would travel to Ann Arbor to face the Michigan Wolverines in a much anticipated game. After a scoreless first period, the Badgers went right back to work. Ryan MacMurchy scored his second goal of the showcase :59 into the second period. Wisconsin would add another goal as Robbie Earl scored an unassisted goal to increase the lead to 2-0. 1:11 later, the Wolverines would score to make it a 2-1 game as Freshman Foward Tim Miller scored his first goal of his career. The third period saw lots of excitement. The Wolverines would tie the game at 2 when Brandon Naurato tied the game at 2 on a 5-on-3 powerplay. It would stay 2-2 until there was 1:58 left when Adam Burish scored the game winning goal and his second goal in the showcase giving the Badgers the 3-2 victory. Goaltender Brian Elliott stoped 23 shots including 13 in the third period.

Michigan went 0 for 2 this weekend as they also lost to Minnesota the night before 6-3 to the Gophers. Minnesota would tie Michigan State 3-3 on Saturday night.

On a side note Michigan State has not won a game in their last 8 contests.

College Hockey Weekly Report Minnesota vs. Denver, and Cornell struggles

Minnesota and Denver lived up to be a great 2 game series. The first night saw the Gophers and the Pioneers skate to a 3-3 tie, while the second night was a better night for Minnesota skating to a 4-3 victory at Magness Arena in Denver. Denver took a 2-0 lead heading into the second period with goals by Gabe Gauthier (Power Play Goal), and Ryan Helgason. However Denver could not hold that lead in the second. Minnesota tied it at 2 late in the second as Mike Howe tied it up. Alex Goligoski scored on the power play earlier in the period. The third period was probably the most exciting period to watch all year. 59 seconds into the third Paul Stansy scored giving Denver a 3-2 lead. However, Kris Chucko (pictured on the left) of Minnesota took over in the third where he scored 2 goals, including a short-handed goal, to give Minnesota the 4-3 victory.

While Minnesota had a good weekend, Cornell did not.

Coming into the weekend Cornell had Union and RPI on the schedule. They should take 4 points right? While if u guessed that you were wrong as they only were able to get 1 point this weekend. The brightside however was the defense played Friday against Union holding the Dutchman to 13 shots on goal. However, the offense could not capitalize as the Big Red got only one goal on 33 shots thus losing to Union 2-1. Against RPI Cornell's defense was strong again holding RPI to 13 shots on goal, but the offense again struggled to put the puck in the net as the Big Red took 36 shots on goal, but could only get one of those in on a power play (5 x 3) as they tied RPI 1-1.

In other College Hockey Action this weekend:

Chris Collins and Brian Boyle each got 2 goals as Boston College defeated Northeastern 5-3. Brock Bradford added another goal in the victory.

New Hampshire and UMASS-Lowell split the weekend home and home series each getting a road victory. Is UMASS-Lowell on the rebound after a pretty good weekend?

Brian Elliott of Wisconsin is continuing his great play as the Badgers swept Minnesota State over the weekend 3-2 on Saturday, and 2-1 on Sunday. So far Elliott is 9-1-2 with a 1.40 goals against average and a save percentage of over 94%.

And the Harvard Crimson continue to play well as they shutout Brown 2-0.

Next Weeks big games:

The Action starts Tuesday night as Boston University will travel crosstown to face Harvard. Also BU has Denver and Colorado College at Aggains Arena in Boston on Friday and Saturday night. Will the Terriers break out of their little slump?

While traveling to Boston, Colorado College and Denver will also play UMASS-Amherst with Colorado College playing UMASS on Friday and Denver playing the Minuteman on Saturday.

Will Ohio State make some noise after a much needed sweep over Lake Superior this week? They got Notre Dame this week as they travel to face the Irish for 2 at the Joyce Center Ice Arena.

And this weekend happens to be the College Hockey Showcase as Michigan and Michigan State will host Minnesota and Wisconsin. Will Michigan keep its #1 ranking? Can the Badgers continue their hot streak? Is Minnesota on the rise up? Can the Spartans rebound and win a game or two after going winless in 6 straight?

Tune in to the weekly report next week for all results.

College Hockey Preview WCHA once again with another big series

I keep saying this every week it seems like and I am getting a little bit tired of it. The WCHA once again has another big game series this weekend when Minnesota travels to Denver for 2.

So far the teams have not played to their potential as Denver (pre-season #1 in most polls) and Minnesota (pre-season #2) are both barely over .500. So both teams will look to breakout out of their slump.

There has been some bright spots for both teams. For Minnesota Junior Foward Ryan Potulny, and Superstar Freshman Phil Kessel are tied for the team lead with 15 points. The goaltending has been a little suspect at times for the Gophers. Junior Kellen Briggs is 3-3-1 with a pretty good goals against average at 2.26, while Freshman Jeff Frazee is 2-0-1 but with a little higher gaa at 2.81 and a lower than average save percentage at .897.

Denver has Senior captain and Hobey Baker contender Gabe Gauthier who has 12 points so far but has not lived up to the hype. Paul Stansy has picked up where he left off Freshman year leading the team in assists with 13 and points with 16. Ryan Dingle leads the team in goals with 9 and Matt Carle has also played well with 10 points. The goaltending however has not been the strong point like it was last season. Glenn Fisher and Peter Mannino have both been suspect at times as they both have a gaa over 2.7 (Fisher 2.77, Mannino 3.20) and have a lower than .90 save percentage (Fisher .891, Mannino .872).

Something has gotta give in this series. Will Kessel continue to shine for Minnesota? Or will the Goaltending and the Defense step up for Denver?

In other college hockey action this weekend

Boston College will look to rebound from a 5-3 loss to Harvard in which they almost came back (down 4-0) as they face Northeastern who they tied earlier in the season at Matthews Arena, game will be played in Conte Fourm.

UMASS-Lowell will look for anything to beat New Hampshire as the River Hawks who had the week off last week will face the Wildcats in a home-and-home series.

A key game in Hockey East as Boston University will travel to Providence to face the Friars. Will BU get on the right track in their up-and-down season so far, or will the Friars continue to surprise Hockey East.

And some key two game series in the CCHA will round up the weekend including Lake Superior and Ohio State who is probably the biggest dissapointment early this year. Also Western Michigan and Michigan State will have a home and home series this weekend.

Who will prevail this weekend? Find out in the Weekly Report next week.

College Hockey Weekly Report Wisconsin continues its great play

For the second straight week the Wisconsin Badgers have had an opponent in the top 5. Once again the Badgers came out on top taking 3 points out of 4 against Colorado College.

Friday night saw Colorado College take a 2-0 lead late in the first. Brett Sterling of the Tigers continued to prove that he is the early season favorite in the Hobey Baker race scoring the first goal of the game. Wisconsin would score late in the first as Tom Gilbert scored with assists from Jack Dowell and Jeff Likens making it a 2-1 game to end the first period.

Jack Skille (pictured above) would score the second goal for the Badgers and that goal would be the last goal of the game as the Badgers and the Tigers skated to a 2-2 tie.

The next night saw total domination on the Badgers side as the highly powered Colorado College offense settled for the big goose egg for the first time since the Denver game last season on March 4.

Wisconsin goaltender Brian Elliott made 22 saves in the shutout. Adam Burish, Ross Carlson, and Joe Pavelski each scored a goal for the Badgers.

On a quick side note record attendence was set on Saturday night at the Kohl Center as 15,237 people with standing room only came to see the Badgers shutout the Tigers.

In other College Hockey action this weekend:

Nathan Gerbe of Boston College scored two goals as the Eagles defeated the Vermont Cattemounts 2-1 at the hostile environment on campus at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

BU lost 2 this weekend after coming off a good weekend last weekend as they lost to UNH on Friday 3-2 and to UMASS-Amherst on Saturday 4-2.

Michigan swept Northern Michigan 3-1 on Friday and 4-3(ot) on Saturday. Watch for the Wolverines to climb up the polls this week.

Denvers early season struggles continue as they only took 1 point from Minnesota State in which the Pioneers settled for a 3-3 tie as Ryan Dingle tied it with 1:57 left in the third, but lost to the Mavericks as the Pioneers got shutout by goaltender Dan Tormey of Minnesota State as the Mavericks got the 4-0 victory.

And it was a good week for the New Hampshire Wildcats as they defeated BU at Aggains Arena 3-2 on Friday Night and also defeated arch-rival Maine 4-2 on Saturday Night.

What to watch for next week:

BC will face Harvard in a key game for both teams. BC will hope to continue to prove that there still one of the best teams in the country while Harvard will look to get a boost. With a victory tommorrow night it might be possible for the Crimson to go on a late run.

Ohio State will look to bounce back after a tough start to the season as the Buckeyes face Michigan State and Lake Superior this weekend.

And Denver will face Minnesota in yet another big WCHA match. The good games seem to be coming early in that conference.

Who will prevail next week? Come back for the weekly roundup next week to find out.

College Hockey Preview WCHA again with the game(s) of the week

#1 Colorado College has held the top spot for the second straight week. The Tigers are loaded with offense as the deadly foward duo of Brett Sterling and last years Hobey Baker award winner Marty Sertich are leading the team in scoring once again. This week will be one of the toughest weeks for the Tigers as they travel to Wisconsin for a 2 game series (Note it is not a home and home series as I said last week).

Wisconsin is also making some noise moving up four spots from #9 last week to #5 this week after sweeping North Dakota. Wisconsin has scored 22 goals in its last 5 games, and have only giving up 6 goals during that span. Brian Elliott has been playing superb in net posting a 6-1-1 record with a 1.48 goals against average. Robbie Earl is leading the Badgers in scoring again this season as he has 12 points. (4 goals, 8 assists)

The Badgers will need their D again in order to stop Colorado College's powerful offense. Will the #1 team in the country the Colorado College Tigers be too much for the Badgers? Or will Brian Elliott and the Wisconsin Defense find a way to stop this high powered Colorado College Offense? It should be a great series.

In other College Hockey action this weekend.

Vermont will look to avenge last weeks loss to Boston University as they face Providence on Friday and Boston College on Sunday (both games at Vermont).

Colgate also has two key games as they travel to Dartmouth on Friday and also making a stop at Harvard on Saturday. Can the Raiders prove that they belong in the top of the ECACHL?

UNH and Maine renew their rivalry on Saturday night in Durham, before they do that the Wildcats of New Hampshire will travel to Agganis Arena to face BU, while the Black Bears will go to UMASS-Lowell. (both the BU-UNH and Maine-UML game are tommorrow night)

And Michigan and Northern Michigan will battle it out for 2 games at NMU.

College Hockey Weekly Report Wisconsin and BU come up big while Quinnipiac is also making noise.

Wisconsin sweeping North Dakota at Grand Forks, BU taking 2 from Hockey East powers, and Quinnipiac wins their first two ever ECACHL games.

Lets start with Wisconsin. They are off to a 5-0-1 start in the WCHA. 2 of those victories came this weekend in North Dakota as they won twice at one of the toughest places to play in the country the Ralph Englestad Arena. On Friday the Badgers defeated the Fighting Sioux 4-2. Robbie Earl tallied a goal and two assists while Brian Elliott stopped 28 of 30 shots by North Dakota. On Saturday Wisconsin tallied 46 including 14 shots in the first period scoring 3 goals during that span. Even though Jordan Parise was spectacular in goal making 42 saves, the Sioux could not find any offense as Brian Elliott made 26 saves in the 4-1 victory.

Boston University regrouped after going 1-2 in October. On Friday night against Vermont Peter McArthur scored 2 goals helping the Terriers defeat the Cattamounts 4-2. John Curry made 19 saves in the victory. After passing test #1 defeating the unbeaten Vermont team, they had to pass test #2 on Sunday when they traveled to Oreno to face the Maine Black Bears. After letting up a power play goal (scored by Greg Moore), John Curry would not let up another goal. In fact he stopped all 19 shots in the third period. BU would capitalize on the good goaltending scoring 2 in the second period as they came up with a huge win at Oreno 2-1. Freshman Jason Lawrence scored his first career goal in the victory.

And Quinnipiac opened up their inagural season in the ECACHL defeating Harvard and Dartmouth. Friday saw the Bobcats score 3 power play goals including a 5 on 3 goal as they defeated the Crimson 5-2 at the Hartford Civic Center. Goaltender Bud Fisher made 35 saves in the victory. The next night against Dartmouth, Mark Van Vilet scored 2 goals and added an assist as the Bobcats defeated the Big Green in a 7-5 victory. Both teams used 2 goaltenders in the game.

In other college hockey action this weekend:

Minnesota only gained 1 point against struggling Minnesota-Duluth as the Bulldogs and Gophers tied on Friday, while UMD took the game on Saturday getting some much needed points.

Ohio State continues to struggle after being ranked #4 pre-season as they were swept by Miami (Ohio).

Michigan took two from Notre Dame.

And the new #1 team in the country the Colorado College Tigers swept St. Cloud State continuing their success in league play.

Next weeks games:

Boston University will look to continue to knock off Hockey East powers as the Wildcats of New Hampshire will come to Agganis Arena on Friday and will travel to UMASS on Saturday.

In the ECACHL Cornell and Harvard will continue their rivalry. The last two champions of the ECACHL happens to be those two teams as Harvard won in 2002 (defeating Cornell) and 2004 while Cornell won in 2003 and 2005 defeating Harvard in both championship games.

Boston College will look to win on the road again as they will face Vermont on Sunday.

And the big weekend series will be in the WCHA as Colorado College and Wisconsin battle it out (home and home) for WCHA supremacy (well for one week anyway).

College Hockey Preview bragging rights up for grabs

The week actually started off on Tuesday with BC and Vermont gaining victories.

Vermont will look for their second Hockey East victory as they will play Boston University at Agganis Arena. BU is off to a 1-1 start in Hockey East defeating and losing to UMASS-Lowell. Overall they are 1-2 with the other loss to RPI.

John Curry has not been living up to they hype after a great year in his Sophomore year. The walk-on goaltender is 1-1 with a 3.17 goals against average with 8 goals allowed in 3 games. Peter McArthur, John Laliberte, and Brandon Yip each have two goals, the rest of the team has only scored 3.

For Vermont goalie Joe Fallon continues to shine as the league change has not effected him one bit. He is 6-0 with a 1.66 goals against average pretty impressive. Senior Brady Leisenring and Sophomore Torrey Mitchell lead the league in scoring both scoring 13 points. Vermont is coming off their first ever Hockey East win as they defeated Northeastern 5-3 with all 5 goals coming in the first period.

Can BU stop Vermont's winning streak? We will know that on Friday

In other College Hockey action this weekend

Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth will face each other for state bragging rights. (well for one week anyway) Minnesota is coming off a weekend split against St Cloud State. Phil Kessel has been impressive on his campaign to be the #1 pick in next years NHL Entry Draft. UMD on the other hand is coming off a 3 point weekend over Michigan Tech. Howevery, the struggling Bulldogs are not getting it done on defense giving up nearly 4 goals a game.

Also North Dakota and Wisconsin will face off. North Dakota is coming off a split with defending National Champion Denver last week. Despite having 6 games against top 20 teams (going 3-2-1), the Fighting Sioux are still impressive going 5-2-1 overall. Wisconsin swept Alaska-Anchorage last week to improve to 4-1-1 and are 3-0-1 in the conference.

Ohio State will look to rebound from a slow start as they will face Miami (Ohio) in a home and home series.

And Quinnipiac will play in its first two ECACHL games as the Bobcats will face Harvard Friday (in Hartford) and Dartmouth on Saturday.

Tuesday Roundup BC and UVM with huge wins

Before last year the Boston College Eagles have had bad luck playing at New Hampshire. Well that all changed on Feburary 26, 2005 when the Eagles defeated the Wildcats 5-2 on their home ice. Last night was notthing different even though the game was played in Manchester.

Chris Collins got things started with his 7th goal of the season with 1:25 left in the first period. Collins' goal now puts him 2nd in the country in goals scored.

UNH would bounce right back when Craig Switzer scored from Brett Hemmingway and Daniel Winnik to tie the game at 1 his first of the season 5:15 into the second period. UNH would score again in the second with Winnik scroing from Brian Yandle and Switzer 12:35 into the second period. But BC would bounce right back as Pat Gannon grabbed a rebound from Brian Boyle's shot and scored to tie the game at 2.

The third period saw alot of shots on goal taken in the period with 28 combined shots. (15 for BC, 13 for UNH) Brock Bradford for BC however scored the game winning goal off a bad angle with 2:51 left in the third period to give BC the 3-2 victory.

Cory Schneider for BC made 33 saves in the victory while Kevin Regan for UNH stopped 35 shots.

There was another game last night where Vermont got their 1st victory in Hockey East moving to 7-0 as they defeated Northeastern 5-3 with all 5 goals coming in the first period. Senior Jeff Corey and Freshman Peter Lenes each had 2 goals while Dean Strong added another goal for the Catamounts. Joe Vitale for Northeastern would score 2 goals but it wasant enough as Vermont got the milestone victory.

Joe Fallon made 21 saves for Vermont in the victory while Adam Garagosian got yanked after the first period letting up 5 goals.

Vermont travels to Boston University on Friday Night. Will their undefeated streak continue? Or will BU defend their home ice.

College Hockey Special Tuesday preview BC VS UNH and Vermont VS Northeastern open up play tonight

In recent history, Boston College and New Hampshire have had quite the rivalry since 1999. Even though UNH has not beaten BC in a Hockey East tournament game since 1997, the two teams have had great battles in the regular season. Tonight they will continue the rivalry at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester.

Last season BC defeated UNH on their home ice for the first time since the 1997-98 season. That win gave them all the confidence they needed as they would win the Hockey East regular season crown, and defeated UNH in the Hockey East finals to win the tournament and gain the top seed in the NCAA tournament. Unfortunatly for both teams they did not make it past the second round last year.

For BC look out for Chris Collins who is tied for second in the country in goals scored with 6 including 2 on the powerplay and 2 shorthanded goals. After some struggle early on in the season, goaltender Cory Schneider played well in net last weekend allowing 2 goals in both games. The defense looked good as well on Saturday, after giving up 9 shots in one period, the defense stood strong only giving up 13 shots the rest of the game in their 3-2 win over Providence on Saturday.

For UNH forward Brett Hemmingway leads the team in points with 7 scoring 5 goals and adding 2 assists. Defensmen Brian Yandle is playing well on both sides of the ice. In terms of their goaltending situation, Jeff Pietrasiak is 2-1 while Kevin Regan has not won a game going 0-1-1 in two games with a goals against average over 3.30. In order for UNH to win this game they have to improve on the defense this week.

In other college hockey action tonight

Vermont will play its inagural Hockey East game as they travel to Matthews Arena to take on Northeastern.

Vermont has been playing great hockey and has a 6-0 start to show for it. Joe Fallon has started where he left off last year as he has won 5 games with a goals against average of 1.40. Forwards Brady Leisenring and Torrey Mitchell have 11 points each leading Hockey East in scoring.

Adam Geragosian goaltender for Northeastern had a tough night last Friday after playing great against BC. He let up 7 goals against RPI in the 7-5 loss but did make 27 saves in the game. Look for him to play tough against another 10 team tonight.
