College Hockey Weekly Report Wisconsin reigns supremacy in the showcase
There is a new #1 team in the land, and that is the Wisconsin Badgers. With victories over Michigan State and Michigan, the Badgers took the top spot in this weeks polls.
On Friday night the Badgers were down against the Spartans 1-0 through 2 periods. However, in the third period Wisconsin's offense clicked. Jake Dowell scored the first goal to tie it at 1, his second goal of the season. Adam Burish would score the game winning goal 5:30 later to give the Badgers a 2-1 lead. Ryan MacMurchy added an empty netter to give the Badgers the 3-1 win over Michigan State. Brian Elliott played well stopping 19 shots out of 20.
On Saturday the Badgers would travel to Ann Arbor to face the Michigan Wolverines in a much anticipated game. After a scoreless first period, the Badgers went right back to work. Ryan MacMurchy scored his second goal of the showcase :59 into the second period. Wisconsin would add another goal as Robbie Earl scored an unassisted goal to increase the lead to 2-0. 1:11 later, the Wolverines would score to make it a 2-1 game as Freshman Foward Tim Miller scored his first goal of his career. The third period saw lots of excitement. The Wolverines would tie the game at 2 when Brandon Naurato tied the game at 2 on a 5-on-3 powerplay. It would stay 2-2 until there was 1:58 left when Adam Burish scored the game winning goal and his second goal in the showcase giving the Badgers the 3-2 victory. Goaltender Brian Elliott stoped 23 shots including 13 in the third period.
Michigan went 0 for 2 this weekend as they also lost to Minnesota the night before 6-3 to the Gophers. Minnesota would tie Michigan State 3-3 on Saturday night.
On a side note Michigan State has not won a game in their last 8 contests.
In other College Hockey Action this weekend
Colorado College, Boston University, Denver, and UMASS all went 1-1 against each other. BU defeated Denver, and lost to #3 Colorado College, while the Tigers lost to UMASS on Friday, and Denver defeated UMASS.
Boston College earned their first shutout of the season as they defeated Merrimack 3-0 on Saturday night.
Harvard went 1-1-1 this past week tying BU, losing to Clarkson, and defeating St. Lawrence.
Cornell got back on the winning track as the offense steped up scoring 10 goals this weekend as they swept Niagara (5-4, 5-3)
And after a rough start to the season, Ohio State looks like its back on the winning track as they swept Notre Dame in South Bend.
This weeks games
Boston College and Boston University renew their historic rivalry in a home and home series. Look for BU to play with a lot of energy as they could be in a must win situation. BC has only lost 1 Hockey East game so far this year and that was against Maine.
Another big rivalry game this weekend will take place in the Rockies as Colorado College and Denver will have a home and home series.
And yet another big rivalry out west as the hottest team in the nation Wisconsin will face Minnesota in Minneapolis for a 2 game series
Michigan will face an early season surprise team in Miami (Ohio).
And the Mayor's Cup will happen this weekend as Providence will face Brown.
